What Sex Is Your Car?

I just learnt a new fact yesterday, from another blogger. You can tell the gender of a car by the shape of it. If it’s a boxy, squarish shape, it’s a MALE car. If it’s rounded in shape, then is a FEMALE car.

Guess who taught me this? None othert than our very own celebrity blogging car 8555. By his definition, a Proton Iswara is male, and Lotus Elise is female. And since him being a car and all, I’m taking his word for it (I think he knows his kind better…)

So that got me thinking: What gender are all the other cars in Malaysia? Male? Female? Transsexual / Ah Kua / Hermaphrodite (mixture of squarish and rounded shape)? Here goes:

(Disclaimer: Before I get another round of spam from disgruntled readers, it’s the gender of the CAR we’re talking about here, NOT the gender of the DRIVERS, OK?!)

Proton TiaraMale.

Honda CityMale (but then why all those racer-boy Ah Bengs love it so much?)

Proton WiraFemale.

Perodua Kelisa – Frankly, looks transsexual to me.

Kia Picanto – Surely female?

Proton Juara – Definitely, one hundred percent, MALE.

Perodua Kembara – one of the very few female 4-WDs.

Perodua Kenari / Toyota Unser / Toyota Avanza - Male, male, male.

Toyota ViosFemale (thank God, Pat!)

Toyota Altis – I say male, my wife say female. So it’s an Transsexual.

Kia OptimaMale (I’m very sad to break this to you, Pat…)

Naza Ria – My wife says male, 5xmom

Kia Rio – Oh, man. That’s so female.

All common Mercedes / BMW / Volvo cars – mostly males (except the convertibles…)

Hyundai ElantraTranssexual.

Hyundai AccentTranssexual.

Hyundai Matrix Transsexual. I’m beginning to see the trend with Hyundai here…

  • Oh! My car was male but we've parted company. Sob sob. Now all we've got left is hubby's car who's female. No wonder he's so attached to her.

  • There's two ways of looking at it - either the car represents the owner's sex, or we are talking about the car itself. If the later, wah, most of us got a lot of explaining to do, man.

But I noticed that a lot of Kelisa owners give their cars female names, and sometimes describe them in terms that I can only describe as "yok ma". Check out some of the forums on autoworld.com.my

  • jason - yeah, my mum's got one of those... definitely female... but very reliable, cheap on the market now, but prone to overheating... Waja is male. No question 'bout it.

    anjali - one UGLY bulldog!

ireneQ - well most new cars are ok for first 2 years, then as it ages, the problems start creeping in. Except if its a wira, problems start from day one... That's why lots of ppl see wira as a 'she'...

MG - what car izzit? does he wash it 4 times a week?

wildcharm - you're refering to the old model, right? the new one is definitely curvy. i like the new one, too bad $$$...

jfe 8555 - oooo... sorry, didn't read that post b4 this... but kinda makes sense, plus if you read Pat's comments...

pat - i think its true most owners feel their cars are an extension of their own personality and gender. that's why guys go for pick-up truck, modified rides and girls decorate their kancils with soft toys. Me? my playstation & gameboy has girlie names...

  • Ei, I used to have Renault Scenic (F), Honda Accord (Japanese chic) and now have Perdana/atm's company car (Perdana = bapok?). Of course, my tanker Naza Ria is a hunky male.

  • nolah 5xmom...perdana is metrosexual.

  • Simon - quite true, that. But if you're determining the gender of the car based on its shape, how do you explain Herbie? He's rounded and cute but he's male ;)

By Blogger Sunflower, at 6/23/2005 03:21:00 pm

  • 5xmom & yuin - waah, metrosexual car... so happening, man...

simon - herbie existed long b4 car genders were determined, back in those days, cars were ... neutered...

  • hot topic!

think i m going to make this longer... i did this kind of 'research' before personally (how weird i m!). My concept on determining the gender of a car is based on it's growing trend and available models. For example:

    1) Kancil - Can be male or female, 1st generation is a male, 2nd generation is a bit rounded so it's a female, and now it's still a female (getting rounder!). Applicable to Kelisa/Kembara with different generations. Kenari? A female i'd say.

    2) Proton Series - Apart from Waja (fat guy) and Perdana (muscular guy) and Satria (GTi sure is more sexy and feminine) , the rest can be either male (sedan) or female (hatchback/aeroback) -- apply them to Wira, Saga, Iswara... for he new limited Proton Wira Aeroback it is a hot chic! Oh, i m not sure about Tiara/Juara, they simply cannot be 'humanized'!

Too many cars to mention but this is basically my idea/mechanism. But out of all models, my classic example is Honda Civic (female). If you look at her history, you can see from the very beginning her 70s chubby-cutie look (like a baby!), then slowly grew to a 80s pre-school look (not good looking but also not bad), and suddenly the 90s robust look was the attractive teenage girl (no doubt it attracted a ton of male drivers), it grew even mature and more feminine to 97s look. During that time almost everyone liked her and wanted her as a dream car (got a nice butt too!). This is not the ending, this pretty girl was soon getting engaged and in a facelift 'wedding' look ((which i consider the most beautiful Civic model ever!), this model was not that popular because honeymooon is that meant for long. To date the latest model, it's already a married woman who is not that popular anymore but people still convinced with her power and personality, and i should say she is still worth a look. Let's see how she will continue to evolve.

Civic does have a brother called Accord, and sometimes i wonder if City is her new-born baby boy, who get so popular nowadays?

  • I'm driving a Toyota Camry. How ah? Or maybe I should just say my car is veeery veeery happy (instead of calling it a trans!) LOL!

  • Some Ah Bengs prefer Kenari.
